A short guide to seeing your life clearly again — from one honest conversation that changed how I understood mine.

On paper, you're fine.

Job. Relationship, maybe. Something you're good at that everyone compliments you for.

But underneath it, there's a version of you that's been performing for so long you've almost stopped noticing. Proving a point to your father. Proving a point to the people who doubted you. Proving a point to yourself, most of all.

You've probably had a season where you thought you'd finally arrived — a role, a title, a "safe" environment where you were finally allowed to be the version of yourself people respected. And then you went home at the end of the day, and the thoughts came back anyway: you're a failure. You can't amount to anything good. You're just pretending. Leave this so-called safe place, and you'll fail there too.

You've tried to outrun it — a new city, a new job, a new chapter where things might finally be different. And for a while it works. And then, quietly, in a place that was supposed to be your fresh start, you find yourself failing again, in the exact same way, as if the thing chasing you packed its bags and came with you.

You're not broken. You're not weak. You've just never had anyone sit you down and show you what's actually underneath the performance.

I want to tell you what changed it for me — not a course, not a program, but one ordinary conversation with a man old enough to have earned the right to say something true to me.


Because I'm about to share the conversation that changed how I saw myself — and how I've since watched it change other men too.


First, who I am

My name is [Your Name]. I'm not a psychologist, and I don't have a certificate on the wall. I'm a fintech founder. I'm also an ordained pastor — I led a church in Nigeria for a few years, and I still carry that role even though I'm not officially in the pulpit anymore.

Being a pastor, strangely, is where I first tried to outrun the performing. Ministry felt like proof — finally, tangible proof that I was becoming someone real. And for a while, it worked. I'd feel it, that sense of transformation, right there in the middle of "doing ministry."

Then I'd go home. And the same old thoughts would come back exactly as loud as before.

When I eventually left Nigeria for the UK, some part of me expected the move itself to fix things — new country, new chapter, new man. Instead, a few months in, I found myself failing in the same old ways, just with a British postcode this time.

How it started

It goes back further than the UK, honestly. Growing up, there was peer pressure, there was parental pressure, and there were other pressures that never got named out loud — they just sat quietly underneath everything. All of it added up to one thing: a life spent performing, aimed at "proving a point" to somebody.

That's a hard way to live even when nobody else can see it. You show up, you do the thing, you get the praise — and it never quite lands. Because the version of you that people are praising isn't fully the real one. So the praise bounces off, and the thought-bombs go off instead.

And the UK didn't cure that. It just gave the same pattern a new setting to repeat itself in.

What I tried before

I didn't go looking for a conversation. I went looking for a role that would finally prove I wasn't a failure.

  • Ministry as proof. I hoped that functioning as a pastor would settle the question of who I was. It gave me good moments — but the thoughts always caught up with me at home.
  • A change of environment. I thought Nigeria itself might be part of the problem, so I left. The UK became just another stage for the same performance.
  • Staying busy and staying "safe." I leaned on environments that felt safe — church, work, routine — without ever addressing what was underneath them.

None of it was wrong, exactly. It just wasn't aimed at the right thing. I was trying to prove myself instead of understanding myself — and no amount of proving ever settles an identity question.

The conversation

A few months into life in the UK, I was in an ALDI on a Saturday afternoon — about as ordinary a place as a conversation can start. I got talking to an elderly man doing his shopping. Nothing planned, nothing dramatic. Just two people talking while they picked up groceries.

But somewhere in that conversation, I saw something in him I hadn't expected to see — not a defeated old man, but a genuinely victorious one. Settled. Sure of himself in a way that had nothing to do with performance.

He said something to me that I still turn over, even now:

"Every man carries three distinct, complementary layers of identity — Man, Husband, and Father. Managing these and bringing them together as a united whole is something you must consciously do to live a fulfilled life. Fail to do that, and you'll stay perpetually stuck in identity crisis."

I could have written him off easily. He was an elderly white British man; I was a young Nigerian man who'd just moved countries. Our cultures didn't obviously align — I had every excuse not to think I needed anything from him. I'm genuinely grateful I didn't take that excuse.

We kept talking over the following weeks. Slowly, I started to understand: I'd spent my whole life performing a single flattened version of "man" — trying to prove a point — without ever consciously building the three layers underneath it. No wonder none of the proving ever worked. I wasn't managing an identity. I was defending one I'd never actually built.

What changed after that

Learning to see myself in those three distinct but connected layers — Man, Husband, Father — moved me out of performance and into something steadier: living. Not perfectly, not overnight, but consciously, in a way I'd never had language for before.

It's shaped how I show up daily — as a man, as a husband, as a father — from a place of understanding who I am, rather than constantly trying to prove what I am.

I've since shared this template with a handful of close friends. What struck me each time was the same reaction: "nobody's ever broken it down for me like that before."

That's why I decided to write it down properly — not just for the friends I happen to sit with, but for men further out than my own reach.
